Anyone with a business idea can apply to compete, subject to the eligibility requirements set out below. The deadline for applications is midnight, Monday, November 14, 2016. A Preliminary Round will be held on Wednesday, November 16, 2016, from which the top 15 ideas/pitches will be selected by a panel of judges to participate in Pitch’Day on November 24, 2016. Competitors will have a maximum of 2 minutes to pitch their idea and will receive up to 5 minutes of Q&A from the panel of judges in both the Preliminary Round and the Pitch’Day Finals.

Founder and Managing Partner of Golden Venture Partners
Matt Golden is the founder and Managing Partner of Golden Venture Partners, a seed and early stage venture capital fund working with disruptive, mobile-focused companies. Current investments include Wattpad, Yesware, TopHat, Joist and Navdy.
Matt has extensive experience as a mobile entrepreneur and investor. Prior to Golden Venture Partners, he was a partner with the BlackBerry Partners Fund. He also co-founded Tira Wireless, an industry leader in mobile content technologies and publishing. Earlier in his career, Matt held senior roles at Brightspark and was an associate at the law firm Osler, Hoskin and Harcourt.

Mark Evans founded Emerging Information Systems Inc. in 1990 and went on to build the company into the largest supplier of financial planning software in the world. He engineered the sale of EISI in the fall of 2011 in a deal which created several millionaires and made many of its 200 employee shareholders very well off. Mark received his PhD in 1988 from the University of Manitoba and was a member of the faculty in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Manitoba from 1984-1997. Mark was selected as the Ernest & Young Entrepreneur of the Year for Technology in Western Canada in 2003 and the Entrepreneur of the Year in 2004 by Manitoba Business magazine.
CEO & Co-founder, Manitoba Harvest Hemp Foods
Since 1998, Mike has run all aspects of Manitoba Harvest, which he recently sold (a majority of the company) for $132.5 million but remains as CEO. Previously, he spent five years in extensive studies of diet and nutrition as he made the life changing decision to lose over 100lbs and go from 300lbs to his current 185lbs. This remarkable accomplishment has given him an excellent knowledge of human anatomy, diet and nutrition and a motivation which allows him to speak to professional groups on improving health and well-being.
Mike has won numerous business awards including Young Entrepreneur of the Year (2004), Socially Responsible Business Award (2006), Company of the Year (2010), CHFA Organic Achievement Award (2010), Spirit of Winnipeg (2014) and CME Emerging Business Award (2014). As well, he has guided Manitoba Harvest to be on the Profit 100 list of fastest growing companies in Canada four of the past five years. Mike has been on television, radio and quoted in newspapers and magazines regarding hemp foods, nutrition and sustainable business.
Mike currently is a Director & Treasurer of the Canadian Organic Trade Association, as well as Director & Treasurer of the Young Presidents Organization (YPO) Manitoba. Mike has served as a Director of the Manitoba Food Processors Association and Director and President of the Canadian Hemp Trade Association. Mike lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba with his beautiful wife Autumn and two healthy and happy children Roan and Rain Fata.

Barb Gamey is cofounder, President and CEO of Payworks, a national workforce management service provider, offering cloud-based payroll, HR, and time management solutions to businesses of all sizes across Canada. Payworks was named one of Canada’s Best Managed Companies in 2012, 2013, and 2014.
Barb has been honoured with awards for her entrepreneurial work, most recently when she was named by Women of Influence Inc. as the winner of the Momentum Award at the 2012 RBC Canadian Women Entrepreneur Awards (CWEA). Barb was also named to the Profit W100 in 2009.
Barb is dedicated to community involvement. Among other commitments, she is the President of Southwood Golf & Country Club and the Chair of the Prairie Theatre Exchange Foundation, actively fundraises for the Assiniboine Park Conservancy and Special Olympics Manitoba, participates extensively with the United Way of Winnipeg, and is the former Chair of the Women’s Enterprise Centre.
Bryce first presented at Pitch’Day in 2012 where he won Best Technology Pitch for Advolve Media. Bryce took home the first-place award at last year’s Pitch’Day with TrapTap. TrapTap is a completely legal, handsfree, speed trap indicator with pre-mapped red light cameras/school zones and community mapped radar traps/road hazards.
These days Bryce is focusing most of his energy on TrapTap. Bryce and his co-founders launched a Kickstarter campaign for TrapTap in March 2016 (only four months after Pitch’Day) hoping to raise $80,000 US, and closed the campaign in May, having raised over $373,000 US and selling over 5,000 units.. The team spent the past year setting up manufacturing and distribution systems to fulfill their Kickstarter orders, and are now focused on closing retail deals and scaling manufacturing.
Bryce graduated from the Asper School of Business at the University of Manitoba with a B.Comm. (Hons.) degree with a double major in Entrepreneurship and Marketing. He launched his first business in 2010 when he was still in school, and his second business, Advolve Media, in the year he graduated.
Bryce is a veteran presenter, and not just through Pitch’Day. In addition to winning several competitions while still in business school, Bryce was a Regional Winner of the Globe and Mail / Telus Corp Small Business Challenge Contest, a winner of the Fundica Funding Roadshow, a finalist of the National Angel Investor Organization Most Promising Startup award, winner of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce 2014 Spirit Awards in the Startup Business Category, and North American Region finalist of “Get in the Ring”, the Global Startup Competition.

- The competition is open to individuals with startup business ideas and early-stage businesses, and includes new business ideas generated by existing businesses.
- You must have less than 6 months OR less than $25,000 in revenue related to the business idea being pitched.
- You must have been incorporated for less than 2 years.
- You must own, or have, or can acquire the legal right to commercialize the business idea being pitched.
- The competition is not open to franchised businesses, traditional retail or services businesses, real property related businesses, or home-based businesses (although in the short term the business may be run out of a home).
- You must complete and submit the online application form and pay the registration fee prior to the registration deadline of midnight on Monday, November 14, 2016. All applications not accepted will be provided a refund of $40, and will be entitled to admission to Pitch’Day on November 24.
- All entries are subject to filing a completed application form and payment of the entry fee prior to the application deadline.
- All qualifying applicants will be required to pitch in the Pitch’Day Preliminary Round on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 in Room P107 at Red River College (Exchange District Campus, The Roblin Centre, 160 Princess St.) from 4:00 pm – 9:00 pm.
- The top 15 competitors chosen from the Preliminary Round will then proceed to the Finals at Pitch’Day on November 24, 2016 at the RBC Convention Centre.
- Each pitch is judged based on the commercial potential of the idea (70%) and presentation quality (30%).
- Factors that should be addressed include (i) what the market problem is (ii) how big the problem is (iii) how your idea solves the problem (iv) who your competitors are (v) why your solution is better (vi) how you will make money, and (vii) who’s on your team. Overall, the judges need to be left with the impression that your business idea is likely to be feasible and scalable.
- Judges, consisting of entrepreneurs and investors experienced in the entrepreneurial process, through their questions will help you better understand your idea’s business potential.
